Luiz de Basto, whose design vocabulary has long incorporated large expanses of curved glass, is trying something totally new on this 55 meter concept he calls Quartz—no doubt a reference to the geometric shapes. He chose flat panel shapes for reduced cost and ease of engineering. The flat glass sections are duplex panes with air and blinds sandwiched between them for thermo insulation and privacy. Smart glass panels are another option. We like the hardtop that projects from the mast to provide shade without the obstruction of support poles. We'll explore this concept in more depth in our book "Megayachts 2014: Concept, Design, Construction" due out in October 2013.
