Costa Rica Information

Costa Rica is an astonishingly beautiful country, full of dramatic landscapes and friendly people.  Lush jungles, active volcanoes, and pristine beaches abound.  While only the size of West Virginia, this small country has over 800 miles of coastline to explore and is home to over 6% of the world’s biodiversity. As an international leader in conservation, Costa Rica has set aside 26% of its territory as protected areas and national parks. Costa Rica has been internationally ranked as “The Happiest Place on Earth” and one of the world’s most ecological countries.

Tourism

In recent years, tourism has become one of the most important sectors of the Costa Rican economy. Playing host to over 2 million visitors per year, this tropical paradise is a tourist’s dream. With a lush and diverse landscape, the country has everything from volcanoes, to rainforest to pristine beaches. Visitors can participate in variety of activities such as white-water rafting, zip lining, kayaking, and hiking as well as sport fishing and sailing.

Costa Rican Government

Costa Rica is the most politically stable country in Central America and has long emphasized its commitment to democracy and respect for human rights. Costa Ricans are very proud of their tradition of peace, with the armed forces being abolished in 1948.

Weather and Seasons

Costa Rica is a tropical country with no winter or summer as such; most regions have a rainy season from May to November and a dry season from December to April. Rainfall averages 100 inches per year and average temperatures range from 72 degrees F in the central valley and 81 degrees on the coast.

Health Care

The Costa Rican healthcare system is rated very highly on an international level. Healthcare is universal and available to all of its citizens.  Recently, medical tourism has seen a surge in popularity, due to the relatively low cost and exceptional care available.

Feria de la Gallina Criolla 2013

Annual Chicken Festival in Silencio, Costa Rica. The town of Silencio is located 20 minutes south of Quepos, near the Savegre River. Silencio is an operating autonomous and agricultural co-op dedicated to the production of palm oil, grains, reforestation, cattle and protection of the surrounding ecology of the land. This annual festival promotes a source of income for the families living there and also is a great way to bring the town together and visitors from other regions. 700 free-range chickens and 150 pigs were raised for the sole purpose of providing food to the festival. The food was amazing and you can see in the pictures ladies making homemade tortillas, chorreadas and many other typical Costa Rican food items. We enjoyed tailgating and eating many of these items throughout the day! The kids had a blast as there were tons of things for them to do including riding horses, ziplining, riding a mechanical bull, a giant slip and slide, among others! There was also live music and a group that interpreted modern dance, something fairly innovative for this region where the local rythms of salsa, merengue and cumbia usually dominate the dance floor. A great festival put on by Coopesilencio!
