The team aboard the Tijereta, owned and operated by Bubba Carter and for this event captained by Tony Carrasosa, carrying anglers Todd Flanders, Dana Thomas and Billy Chase “BC” Angel and supported by mates Minerva Gonzalez and Nelson Muñoz, took top honors in the first year of the Quepos Billfish Cup, scoring 1500 points by releasing 5 sailfish and 2 Marlin. Team Tijereta outpaced their nearest competitor by 372 points. In addition to winning the tournament, angler BC Angel made his first personal Offshore Grand Slam as well as taking the first Team Grand Slam award in the tournament series. Congratulations to team Tijereta! Being a qualifying event for the IGFA Offshore World Championship, this year’s winning team also receives the invitation to the 2013 IGFA Offshore World Championship event.
Marina Pez Vela hosted the 1st annual Quepos Billfish Cup tournament of the Costa Rica Big Game Series from the 12th through the 15th of April 2012, offering an exciting and competitive event for everyone involved while benefiting charities to Protect the Children of Quepos. With 13 boats, the kickoff of the Quepos Billfish Cup began with lines in at 8:00 am on Friday the 13th. Action started early at 8:08 am with the first Sailfish hooked up, but then lost, aboard the 51 Rivera Reel Easy. On Good Day Too, angler David Dallimore refused to be left out and released a sailfish at 8:27 am, scoring the first release of the tournament.
Aboard Tijereta, BC Angel hooked a Black Marlin and released it at 9:33 am starting their team’s Grand Slam opportunity. The Quepos Billfish Cup Grand Slam award is designed for a team entry but, before lines out BC confirmed his determination by completing his first personal Offshore Grand Slam by also releasing a Sailfish and a Blue Marlin on opening day. Team Tijereta ended up being the boat with the highest score of the day, with a total of 1200 points by releasing 2 marlin and 2 sailfish.
Closing the day was again David Dallimore who realized an “alleluia hook up” with two minutes to go before lines out. This team’s solo angler released his first and the final blue marlin for the day, placing Good Day Too solidly into second place.
Our anglers set out on the second day of fishing trying to position themselves in a better standing on the leader board. Several boats released sailfish with the only Marlin of the day being caught by the team aboard the Rum Runner. The Tijereta remained the boat with the most releases of the tournament.
The Good Day Too placed second with captain Esteban Marcos and angler David Dallimore with 1128 points by releasing 6 sailfish, one Marlin and a 28 pound mahi mahi. Through diligence and skill, combined with opportunity, David Dallimore also took home the Top Angler award.
Frenzy II with captain Rafael Solano and angler William Jimenez finished in third place with 723 points releasing 7 sailfish and a 23 pound mahi mahi. This weighable fish was the only difference between the third and fourth place!
The biggest fish Weighed award went to Alex Nole from Let it ride. The most tags award was won by the crew of the Pez Espada, which also was the fourth place team. Congratulations to the winners of the Quepos Billfish Cup 2012!!
Money was raised for the Protect the Children of Quepos charity through angler participation, Calcutta proceeds, donations from the Chamber of Commerce members through a silent auction, and also those who kindly donated directly to this noble cause. We would like to sincerely thank all our participants, sponsors, volunteers, our community and everybody who assisted the Marina Pez Vela team in making this event possible. We are most grateful for your support.
