Annual Chicken Festival in Silencio, Costa Rica. The town of Silencio is located 20 minutes south of Quepos, near the Savegre River. Silencio is an operating autonomous and agricultural co-op dedicated to the production of palm oil, grains, reforestation, cattle and protection of the surrounding ecology of the land. This annual festival promotes a source of income for the families living there and also is a great way to bring the town together and visitors from other regions. 700 free-range chickens and 150 pigs were raised for the sole purpose of providing food to the festival. The food was amazing and you can see in the pictures ladies making homemade tortillas, chorreadas and many other typical Costa Rican food items. We enjoyed tailgating and eating many of these items throughout the day! The kids had a blast as there were tons of things for them to do including riding horses, ziplining, riding a mechanical bull, a giant slip and slide, among others! There was also live music and a group that interpreted modern dance, something fairly innovative for this region where the local rythms of salsa, merengue and cumbia usually dominate the dance floor. A great festival put on by Coopesilencio!
